What is Consonant?

A consonant is a type of speech sound or letter in the alphabet that is produced by partially or completely blocking airflow in the vocal tract. They are called "consonants" because they typically occur in conjunction with vowels to form syllables, which are the basic units of speech. Consonants can be voiced or voiceless, and they can be classified into different types based on their manner of articulation (how they are produced), place of articulation (where they are produced in the vocal tract), and whether or not they are nasal (allowing air to pass through the nose).
