Using the RICE Approach to Treat a Sprained Ankle

Sprained Ankle Treatment: RICE Approach

Rest

When you have a sprained ankle, one of the first steps in the RICE approach is to rest the affected area. Avoid putting weight on the ankle and refrain from activities that may worsen the injury.

Ice

Ice is applied to the area of the sprain to help reduce inflammation and numb pain. It is recommended to use an ice pack or ice wrapped in a cloth for about 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours for the first 48 hours following the injury.

Compression

Using compression bandages or wraps can help reduce swelling and provide support to the injured ankle. Make sure not to wrap the bandage too tightly to avoid cutting off circulation.

Elevation

Elevating the sprained ankle above heart level can also help reduce swelling. This position encourages fluid to drain away from the injured area, promoting faster healing and reducing pain.

Hope this helps! :)
