Litmus Test for Unknown Liquids

Litmus Test for Unknown Liquids

Litmus paper strips were dipped in two different unknown liquids. The table below shows the pH of the two liquids:

Litmus Paper Strip pH of Liquid
X 9
Y 4
What will happen to the litmus strips?

Answer:

X will turn blue and Y will turn red

Explanation:

Since X has a pH of 9, it will turn blue because anything with a pH higher than 7 turns blue. Since Y has a pH of 4, it will turn red because anything with a pH lower than 7 turns red.
